The Birth of an AnimeFan
One evening in early January of 1996, a friend mentioned to me that I sounded like Sailor Moon.
My reaction: Sailor who? Mind you, I thought he was making fun of me, because I was just getting over being ill for 3 weeks.
He continued, saying it was this cartoon that was on way too early in the morning. My curiosity got the best of me, and I decided to check it out anyway.
I kept managing to miss the first half of the show for a week or so, because I couldn't get my lazy butt out of bed early enough. So I decided to tape it. It took me a week to get totally addicted to the show! HAD TO HAVE MORE!! My friends didn't help, pointing me in the direction of the toys and original episodes.
The obsession got really bad.....very quickly. It had to stop. Thought to myself... ...hmmm... I'll be Sailor Moon for Halloween-- THAT will get it out of my system. Got a passable version done in time for a local parade. Every kid went crazy. The response was so amazing...almost overwhelming. Well, in short, the plan didn't work. It just made it worse. >.<
So I decided to wear it again on Halloween night. I was hanging at a friend's house, and I just happened to be in a back room, standing in direct view of the front door, when a group of trick-or-treaters came. The door was opened and the next thing I know some girl is yelling, rather..um...excitedly: "Ohmygod!..It's Sailor Moon!!" I hid. I wasn't in the mood for dealing really hyper folk. Why am I telling you this? A few months later I wound up meeting that rather excited girl! We became friends and has hastened my introduction to anime beyond Sailor Moon. (She's also one of the biggest SM fans I know too.)
