SailorMo's Cosplay

The Birth of a Cosplayer

In July 1997 I got wind of a costume ball at a gaming con. It was another opportunity to wear my Sailor Moon costume other than Halloween, so I had to go! My "partner in anime", Natasha, came too.

It turned out to be a dud, but some friends were GMing there so we hung around, mostly in the anime room. This one guy was really impressed with my costume. He took a couple of pictures and chatted with us. The topic of Otakon came up. We looked at him blankly: "Ota-what?" He explained some details and suggested we go. Natasha & I were wary, since it was only about a month away.

I checked out Otakon's site. We thought it might be worth all the last minute planning and decided to go. Natasha wanted to do a costume, so she made Sailor StarMaker. I figured there was gonna be like a dozen Sailor Moons, so I decided to do Princess Serenity. We really had no clue what cosplay was--didn't really want to do a skit--we just wanted to show off our costumes. We went into it blind. But ya know what? We had so much fun that night! So much that we decided to do it all again--at Katsucon!

The rest is history.
